Juniper is one of Britain's native conifers and occurs naturally in a variety of situations: in the south it grows on chalk downs and is one of the stages in the formation of a beech wood. Further north it grows on moorland while in Scotland it flourishes on the acid soils of pine forests.
The berries are still used for flavouring gin
