Bats

Not often seen except at dusk, all bats are legally protected and their roosts should not be disturbed. Bats in roofs are rarely a problem, in fact it should be considered a privilege to have bats in your roof.

Pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus)

Head and body 3.5-5cm, wingspan 18-24cm

The Pipistrelle is the smallest and the commonest of our bats and the one most likely to be roosting in your roof. Entirely nocturnal, they emerge at dusk. They hibernate from November to March.

Feeding:- Moths and other insects in flight, often seen feeding on insects attracted to lights.

Habitat:- Woodland margins, towns and villages, commonly roost in house roofs.

Brown Long-eared Bat (Plecotus auritus)

Head and body 3.5-5cm, wingspan 24-28cm

The Brown Long-eared Bat is so named because its ears are over half its body length. Entirely nocturnal. Hibernates from late October to March.

Feeding:- Moths and other insects taken from leaves and in flight, will often take back to a perch to eat and feeding sites are often marked by piles of moth wings.

Habitat:- Open woodland, parks and mature gardens. Roosts in hollow trees and buildings and regularly uses bat boxes and commonly roost in house roofs.

Important points

Bats are legally protected and it is an offence to disturb them.

You need a licence to handle bats.

Contact your local Wildlife trust or Bat Conservation Trust if bats become a problem.

Siting Bat Boxes

Bat boxes should be sited 2.5 to 5 mtrs high (depending on whether low or high flying bats are sighted) Bats may change direction of roost preferred, dependant on weather conditions and season. Ideally three boxes should be fixed on a tree facing north, or south to south east.
