Bees

  • Not all bees are swarming bees, many are gentle solitary bees such as the mason bee.
  • They are essential pollinators of many flowers and fruits and can be used commercially, especially in orchards to increase yields.
  • Solitary bees are gentle and safe to encourage to your garden.
  • The female leafcutter bee cuts circles from leaves with her jaws and uses them to make cells for her grubs.
  • Solitary bees prefer wood nest sites and will readily use purpose built bee boxes especially if sited in warm sunny positions near to their food source..
  • The Mason bee makes cells using mud, wedged into holes such as those in bug houses, they will also use soft mortar from walls but rarely does any serious damage.
  • The honey bee is a social bee and lives in colonies with a single queen and several thousand workers.
