Population status of birds in the UK

Many of our British bird species are in decline mainly due to changing farming practices and the use of pesticides. We can all help to rectify this situation by helping those species particularly at risk. The government and conservation organisations have produced a red list of those most endangered and an amber list of others at risk. The surprising thing is that many of the birds on the red list are those that most people would consider to be our “common” birds, such as the starling (down 75%) and the house sparrow (down 34%).
