Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes)

Foxes have become quite adapted to urban life and you are probably more likely to see foxes at close quarters in a town where foxes have got used to the sights and sounds of humans than you are in the countryside where they are much more persecuted as farmers see them as a threat to their livestock. In the towns they are more welcome as they keep down the population of vermin. They are mostly nocturnal.

Food

Foxes eat small mammals, squirrels and rabbits mainly, but they will also eat insects, earthworms, small birds and their eggs, grass, fruit and carrion. They are fond of blackberries. In gardens they will feed on meat scraps and dog food from the lawn or patio, they will even eat scraps left out for the birds.

Habitat

The foxes natural habitat is mixed but mainly woodland. They are very adaptable creatures, however and have even been known to raise their young on urban traffic islands. The vixen will start to dig an earth in January in preparation for raising her cubs which are usually born in March.

Important points

Foxes don’t kill for fun, they will eat what they need and any surplus will be stored for later use.

If you have foxes visiting your garden, make sure bins are strong and secure or they will rip bags open for meat scraps and make a lot of mess.

Post mortem evidence has shown that lambs taken by foxes are likely to be already dead or weak.

Keep fox and other animal feeding bowls separately and wash carefully, do not clean or dry with dishcloths used for humans.

The fox does not prey on cats and is much smaller than most people think
