Moles (Talpa europaea)

Rarely seen the mole gives itself away by the piles of earth, excavated from its tunnels, it leaves in a trail across lawns and fields.

Food

90 per cent of the moles diet is earthworms in winter, but they also eat slugs, millipedes and insect larvae which they find in the soil.

Habitat

Moles like woods and grasslands, including orchards and lawns or anywhere where there is an abundance of earthworms.

Moles are not blind, they have tiny eyes that can detect light and movement, but little else.

Young moles are an important part of a tawny owls diet in spring.

Moles are sensitive to vibration so to get rid of moles from your lawn without harming them use a vibrating (a childs windmill stuck in the ground may work) or sonic device.

It is said that putting mothballs into a moles run will deter it.
