Owl Family

Tawny Owl (Strix aluco)

Length 38cm

Our commonest owl, the Tawny owl, is rarely seen in the daytime but frequently heard at night especially in rural areas.

Feeding:-
Mice, birds, voles, rats, moles, shrews, frogs, toads, fish and beetles.

Nest:-
In holes in trees or specially designed nest boxes.

Barn Owl (Tyto alba)

Length 34cm

This bird is on the amber list

Although rare in some parts of the UK, it has its strongholds. Sometimes called “ghostly” the beautiful barn owl is usually seen at night by drivers along country roads where its white underside is seen. It is often dazzled by car headlights which result in road casualties.

Nest:-
In undisturbed buildings and barn owl boxes also in hollow trees especially elms.

Feeding:-
Mice, shrews and other small mammals, sometimes small birds.
