Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus)

Length 33 cm

The moorhen is often seen in parks with lakes and by rivers and canals, but will often visit gardens with ponds.

Feeding:-
Eats worms, snails, fish, leaves, seeds and berries. Will also eat bread and fat.

Adult and juvenile

Nest:-
 Of twigs and reeds in vegetation along waters edge


Coot (Fulica atra)

Length 38 cm

The coot prefers larger expanses of water than the moorhen, so is only likely to visit gardens with large ponds or those beside rivers.

Nest:-
Pile of vegetation in shallow water.

Feeding:-
Pond weed, and snail, beetles and other aquatic life. Will also eat grain, bread and other scraps.
