Swallow Family


Swallow (Hirundo rustica)

Length 19 cm

The swallow is described as the herald of spring usually arriving in the UK from Africa as our weather starts to warm up. They can be attracted to the garden during the breeding season by watering dry patches of soil to create mud for their nests.

Feeding:-
Small flying insects taken in the air, its nestlings are fed with balls of insects taken from the parents throat.

Nest:-
Made of mud and twigs and sited on beams and walls in old barns and other outbuildings. Will also use manmade bowl nests.


House Martin (Delichon urbica)

Length 12.5cm

 This bird is on the amber list

The House martin is not always welcome to nest on peoples houses as it can make quite a mess, however, it can be fascinating watching them so close to home and to listen to their “chatter”.

Feeding:-
 Like the swallow the house martin feeds on small flying insects mostly taken in the air.

Nest:-
 Mud nest, lined with feathers and grasses usually under the eaves of houses. Will also use manmade bowl nests.
