An attractive small tree found in deciduous woodland. Creamy white flowers appear in May produce dark cherries in August, which are attractive to birds.

Wild Cherry s

WILD CHERRY TREE (Prunus avium) - £3.95 each

Maximum height 60ft (20m). It prefers clay soils over chalk and is a common component in beech woods. When well grown and canker free it provides a valuable timber more quickly than any other broadleved tree. The small red berries, whilst not poisonous, are not edible. They will however provide a feast for birds in early summer.

Native throughout the British Isles, it can grow to 30ft (9m). A small spreading tree often with a dense crown and large twisted branches, the latter can be quite spiny. Delicate white flowers provide an autumn crop of crab apples and although the fruit is bitter it can be made into jelly, jam and wine. It is an excellent food source for birds. Not thought to be native, it will grow to around 50ft (15m). Suckers may form a thicket around the parent plant. The wood is used for carving veneers and in the manufacture of musical instruments. Birds eat the fruit which is bitter. Mistletoe develops on the bark as a parasite.

Native throughout the British Isles, it grows to around 130ft (40m). It is usually the last tree to come into leaf in spring and one of the earliest to lose it's leaves in the autumn. It flourishes on a lime rich soil. The wood is extremely strong lending itself to a variety of purposes, especially handles for tools. When dried it burns with a clear blue flame making it a sought after commodity for winter fuel.

The tree forms a regular conical shape with the higher branches ascending and lower branches either level or drooping; it can reach 130ft (40m). The light green needles are short and prickly protruding on all sides of the shoot. The cones are long and cigar shaped with rounded scales and they hang down. It produces a high yield of good quality timber for building work. It is also suitable for paper pulp as the wood is composed of long fibres that bind together well. 15-40m Cell grown tree supplied

Commonly found in old woodlands and artificial surroundings such as churchyards.
An evergreen conifer with dark green foliage and red berries. As a tree it may reach 40 foot but is usually clipped as an evergreen hedge.

JUNIPER TREE (Juniperus communis) - £3.95 each

Although it can reach a height of 20ft (6m) tall, the plant generally remains a low twisted shrub with spreading branches. The spikey blue-green needles are in groups of three, each has a white band on upper sides. Berries are green in first year and ripen to dark purple in the second year. Juniper is one of Britain's native conifers and occurs naturally in a variety of situations: in the south it grows on chalk downs and is one of the stages in the formation of a beech wood. Further north it grows on moorland while in Scotland it flourishes on the acid soils of pine forests. The berries are still used for flavouring gin.

It grows to 115ft (35m) in Britain. It's down turned branch tips and shoots give the whole tree a delicate drooping appearance thus making it one of the most attractive conifers. It can be grown on a wide variety of soils except those containing chalk. It grows rapidly and regenerates easily producing many seedlings. Young trees require shady moist conditions and it is therefore useful for planting under other tree crops.

A quick growing tree, capable of reaching 130ft( 40m). On the continent the larch is a mountian species adapted to long winters and short growing seasons; in Britain it has a longer growing season and grows quickly in dry areas. Being deciduous it is often treated as a "honorary broadleaf" to provide diversity in conifer plantations. The rot resistant heartwood makes the timber a popular source of fencing material as well as light furniture timber.

SITKA SPRUCE (Picea sitchensis GI ) - £3.95 each

A vigorous tree commonly reaching a height of 120ft (35m). Needles are long thin and sharp dark green above and blue green below. The often maligned "factory tree" of British upland foresty, Sitka spruce has proved a valuable tree for many rural communities since it's large scale planting early in the 20th century. Sitka requires plenty of moisture and thrives in the wetter areas of western Britain where conditions resemble those of its native home on the west coast of America. The white or pale brown wood is light but strong. It has long fibres for paper making.
