Along with the firecrest, the Goldcrest is Europe’s smallest bird. Often present in gardens with conifers.
Nest:- Cup nest of moss and lichen, held together with spiders webs, sited in conifers such as cypress and large but will also use ivy and gorse.
Feeding:- Small insects and their larvae, spiders and moths. Will eat crumbs, fat and grated cheese from the bird table.
Blackcap(Sylvia atricapilla)
Length 14 cm
The Blackcap is easy to identify with its black cap as its name suggests, however the female has a rusty red coloured cap.
Feeding:- Insects and their larvae, spiders and small snails in spring. Fruit such as cherries and pears when available, also berries. Will eat seed , nuts and meal worms from the bird table.
Nest:- Cup nest of dry grass and roots, lined with fine grass and hair, sited in dense bushes and hedgerows.
