Wasps

  • wasp nests are made of chewed wood mixed with saliva to make a papery substance.
  • nly fertilised queens survive the winter to start a new colony every year.
  • Old nests are abandoned and fresh ones built every year.
  • Larger wasps nests can house up to 20,000 workers in one season.
  • Nests are built underground, in roofs or hollow trees.
  • Wasps will catch and kill other insects to feed to their grubs and will also collect nectar from flowers and other sweet things such as fruit.
  • Although not usually seen as a beneficial insect, the grubs eat thousands ofinsect pests.
  • The large hornet will plunder the nests of bumble and honey bees for prey.
