 It will make new holes every year in old trees, leaving its previous years, creating nesting sites for other birds.

Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopus major)

Our commonest woodpecker, the Great spotted will visit garden birdfeeders although it is quite shy and easily disturbed. Although an interesting sight in the garden, it will however attack nest boxes and eat young birds.

Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis)

 This bird is on the amber List

A colourful bird that only occasionally visits gardens feeding on ants in lawns. The Green woodpecker does not eat at feeding stations but you can encourage it by leaving ants nests in lawns and not cutting down old trees.

Nest:-
In holes in old trees, in woods, orchards, parks and gardens. May also use large enclosed nest boxes.
